Under each photo there is a postcard size work area to make a pen and ink line drawing. | Sketching from reference photos opens a new world of interesting subjects, and with digital photography and bright computer screens, you can do plein air sketching whenever you wish. Most photos are proportioned like most sketches and watercolors, leaving little opportunity for the artist to bring fresh composition to the scene. But not so with widescreen reference images; they provide a horizontal view similar to what our own eyes encompass, letting us choose one of several focal points and the composition that supports it. These Pen and Ink and Watercolor Wash Sketching Tip Sheets can be printed on any computer printer using either a good quality multipurpose paper or drawing paper that has been cut to 8.5” x 11” to fit the printer. When making sketches on the printed sheets, you can use the printed photo for reference. Alternatively, when viewing the PDF file in Acrobat Reader, you can sketch from the computer screen and use the magnifying glass on the toolbar to zoom into the photo and discover the smallest details. This is an especially helpful tool if you have chosen a distant object as the focal point of your sketch. |

| These practice sheets combine a photograph with a blank frame for a sketch. I print them out, and fasten them to a clipboard so they are always ready when I want to do a quick sketch. I really like working with my clipboard filled with these sheets, ready to be sketched, and I hope you may also find them useful. Doing more than one drawing from a photograph has the advantage of forcing me to seek a new composition for the final drawing, so that working from a photo is more like sketching outdoors. In plein air, one is forced to look around and move objects in order to place items where they fit best in the arrangement of the sketch. |

| When
sketching, pretend the widescreen photo is your plein air view. Choose
a small area with a focal point and sketch your own composition in the
postcard sized drawing area provided on the Tip Sheet. Use pens, markers,
or pencils when working on printer paper. For your second sketch, work
on drawing paper. Use pens, inks, new water brushes, or watercolors
for wet media washes. Choose a different focal point and, for your second composition, make a thumbnail sketch in the small drawing area. Using drawing paper that accepts wet media, try various techniques for shapes, lines, and tones in a larger, 6” x 4” postcard size sketch. |

| Later it was copied onto drawing paper that would accept a watercolor wash in order to produce a second ink sketch tinted with washes. Using a copy machine to make multiple copies of line sketches is an excellent way to experiment with various watercolor paints and washes. |
